Coming Summer 2025

The Advanced Foundations Module is highly recommended to take before other modules, but not required.

The Foundations module will explain the neuroanatomical gross anatomy and anatomy of a stroke, neuroplasticity, and review traditional TCM stroke methods. This groundbreaking workshop teaches techniques that can be used not only for stroke rehabilitation, but for orthopedic patients.

Upon completing this seminar, practitioners will have a complete understanding of the core stroke protocols and a working and applicable system that can be applied to virtually any patient with stroke, including but not limited to, the following symptoms:

  • Foot drop
  • Gait analysis and correction
  • Swelling
  • Speech aphasia, dysphasia, and dysarthria
  • Subluxed shoulder and decreased shoulder range of motion
  • Reduced grip strength/difficulty grasping
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Limb spasticity and flaccidity
  • Tingling Sensations
  • Paralysis
  • Proprioception disruption
  • Balance issues
  • Motor continuity problems
  • Diaphragmatic breathing deficits

The Foundations Module Will Cover

Participants will learn the key principles of the original Xing Nao Kai Qiao (XNKQ) acupuncture stroke rehabilitation system created by his mentor Dr. Shi Xue Min in Tianjin, China. You will learn the history, research, and evidence-based science behind the physiological workings of the XNKQ system. Dr. Shiu will demonstrate how to needle the XNKQ classical points and know when to apply the methods in your clinic.

Dr. Shiu will describe how the Nanopuncture system uses modern Western neurological diagnostic methods and neurological and orthopedic testing to determine the most effective treatment protocol for each patient and objectively measure their progress. Students will also learn how Nanopuncture works in tandem with modern orthopedic and physical therapy training and treatment.

The Foundations module will cover how to restore healthy neurological blood flow to the brain, how to awaken areas of the body that have fallen asleep due to stroke injury, how to treat the upper extremity and lower extremity spasticity sequelae, and how to safely needle nerves in the brachial plexus and lumbosacral plexus.

Dr. Shiu will give students an introduction to photobiomodulation and QEEG modalities and explain how to utilize them in their clinics and when to apply them in treatment.

Dr. Shiu will invite guest stroke patients for a live demonstration of his methods and review case studies of other patients whom he has treated. Participants will learn basics of needle manipulation and techniques to get more effective results when treating injured nerves and the neurovascular system. This method leads to higher efficacy in restoring blood supply to the nerves and central nervous system. Dr. Shiu will cover:

  • How to break down an hour-long Nanopuncture session to achieve the best results

  • How often to manipulate needles to effect specific changes in each patient

  • How to manage the patient in the healing process

There will be ample time allotted to partner and practice. Dr. Shiu and an experienced Nanopuncture practitioner will work directly with participants to coach them and make any necessary needle adjustments. You will walk away with confidence in applying the Nanopuncture system.
